dirge of cerberus

the g reports and the secret ending

Genesis's first appearance is in Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-, the PS2 sequel thing to FFVII starring the mysterious Vincent Valentine. In DoC, Genesis is referred to only as "G," but magazine articles in Japan confirmed his name to be "Genesis." In any case, I've taken it upon myself to investigate the man himself. ;)

All of the following scripts (the indented lines) are from Final Fantasy Worlds Apart, used with permission. :D

An inkling

These words are spoken by a crewmember of the Shera and reveal information about Deepground and Genesis.

Deepground.
It used to be a medical facility for injured SOLDIER troops.
Military personnel would be sent there for care and rehabilitation.
However, over time, it evolved into a laboratory for madmen content on ignoring all laws of man and nature.
And supposedly, this evolution took place because of the existence of one rogue soldier — a man known only as "G."

Hmm... so Deepground started out benign and then became corrupt? Something tells me Hojo was involved in the bit about a madman ignoring laws of nature. There are other insinuations in these words, but I'll get into them later.

Taboo

The Shinra Company is feared across the globe for its ruthless army, SOLDIER.

However, there are two members of this legion of whom few have the courage to speak.

While one is well known: the infamous "S" — a symbol of strength and destruction — the other remains shrouded in an eldritch veil of shadows. All records of this man's existence have been deleted: the only remnant of his legacy being the lone letter "G".

"S" is, without a shred of doubt, Sephiroth. (And if it's not I'll keel over or something.) This report says that information about Genesis is so scarce that only the first letter of his name is known. :0 I have the same problem... *coughs thickly*

A Single Record

"G"...
We can only begin to imagine who this enigmatic warrior might be.

There are rumors that he was a biochemically constructed prototype for the soldier who would become "S". However, there are no documents to support these claims. In fact, there is so little information on "G" that his existence may be nothing but a fabrication.

The only thing that may give insight into this mystery is a lone personnel record which indicates that several years ago, a SOLDIER 1st class was assigned a top-secret mission to pursue a target referred to only as "G". Unfortunately, any further data on this mission has been lost or destroyed...

The event alluded to in this report will certainly be told in full in Crisis Core, because promotional trailers have revealed that Zack and Angeal's mission is to find the rogue First Class SOLDIER, Genesis. Other than that... I suppose we'll just have to see.

Below Midgar

"G" slumbers below Midgar...
Silently abiding his awakening...

Or so tell the stories of the vagrants who dwell in the slums of the mephitic metropolis. However, could there exist some truth behind these rumors?

Being one of the few who was involved in their construction, I know all too well of the vast caverns that sprawl deep beneath our city's streets.

This will more than likely be my final entry. The last fragment of data I have uncovered reads as follows:

Soldiers branded with epithets of color... These are the hellspawn of "G".

You have to wonder who the author of these reports is and what his involvement is — if he was involved in the construction of Midgar (and I'm still trying to find a freaking year for that), just who is he? One idea is Reeve, since he's Midgar's architect (though I'm trying to figure that out too, since he's too young given how old I estimate Midgar to be), but perhaps not. The reports were almost certainly written before Meteorfall, as Shin-Ra is stated to be still around.

The last lines are a direct reference to the Tsviets of Deepground — all of the Tsviets have a name that's a color in another language and dress in their color (well, except Shelke). If they're the "hellspawn" of Genesis... is that related to the idea that Deepground became a corrupt place for madmen because of him?

Secret Ending

Genesis: It is not yet time for slumber. We still have much work to do... My brother.

The secret ending shows Weiss in an underground cave thing. Nearby, there is a big explosion, from which a man falls from. He walks over to Weiss, actually walking on water, and picks him up, then speaks the line above before flying off with the single black wing over his left shoulder.

The significance of this scene is probably major, but I don't know the details yet, so I can't say much. However, calling Weiss his "brother" points to the whole "hellspawn" thing. :D

... in retrospect this is more rambling than actual analysis. Sorry. D:
